MANDELA MEMORIAL: FAKE SIGN LANGUAGE INTERPRETER CLAIMS IT WAS ‘SCHIZOPHRENIC EPISODE’

The sign language interpreter who appeared at Nelson Mandela’s memorial and was later exposed as being a fake has been named, and claims he suffered a schizophrenic episode on stage that left him unable to do his job properly.

Thamsanqa Jantjie told the Johannesburg Star:

“There was nothing I could do. I was alone in a very dangerous situation. I tried to control myself and not show the world what was going on. I am very sorry, it’s the situation I found myself in”.

“Life is unfair. This illness is unfair. Anyone who doesn’t understand this illness will think that I’m just making this up,”.

Jantjie added that he could not leave, so stayed on and continued to sign things that did not make sense.

The 34-year-old apparently takes medication for his alleged schizophrenia but was removed from a job because of it several years ago. He said he relies on social benefits payments to survive, along with the occasional interpreting job.
